Surveys by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the American Association of Orthodontics have revealed that the number one cosmetic dental concern of patients is a discolored smile. Your teeth may lose their brightness and turn a yellow hue for a number of reasons including age, pigmented drinks (such as coffee, tea and wine), trauma, tobacco usage, and certain medications.
Teeth whitening is normally not achievable if you are experiencing discoloration due to fluorosis, trauma or medications. Whitening also does not usually work on artificial dental hardware such as bridges, crowns or porcelain veneers. Keep in mind you may have to replace dental hardware to match your teeth after a whitening procedure.
Teeth whitening is a simple procedure that can be achieved various ways and restore your teeth at least to their natural whiteness, and possibly lighter. We offer laser whitening or at-home kits with trays that are custom fit to your teeth. We are happy to discuss these options with you in detail in our office so you know what to expect from and choose the method that is best for you.
Laser whitening starts by very thoroughly cleaning and polishing the teeth. Your teeth are then coated with a gel and a laser beam activates the solution. Your face and gums will be carefully protected and only your teeth that are being whitened will be exposed. The procedure takes an hour or two to complete. Oxidation begins instantly and your teeth will become 5-6 shades lighter than before treatment.
It is common to experience sensitivity for several hours after treatment. We can offer a desensitizing procedure to help with the discomfort. Although our laser whitening process provides beautiful, instant results, this is the more costly option and results may not last as long as our at home-method.
Our home whitening kits are our more affordable but slower working whitening procedure. Your kit is created by first taking an impression of your teeth. Our lab technician then makes a custom fitted tray that will hold the bleach solution right next to your teeth. The whitening solution we provide is much stronger than what you can purchase in the store. Our team will recommend the correct amount of time you should wear your whitening trays each day.
You can expect the results of whitening procedures to last for several years, and periodic touch ups can help maintain your teeth’s whiteness even longer. Of course, routine cleanings, proper brushing and flossing will also extend the life of your treatment.
